Artist's Statement

As an abstract painter, the challenge is to make the complex accessible…to draw in and engage the viewer. The idea is to create a dialog with the observer, a visual conversation between the seen and unseen, which encourages the viewer to complete the story. I’m a studio painter and work with acrylics and mixed media, using multiple layers of paint, texture mediums, bits of metal, glass, string, nails, ripped fabric—most anything to create tactile surfaces. Editing my work with color, shape, and line allows me to express mood, ideas, relationships, and invention. Many layers of thinned acrylic paint create depth. A combination of organic and geometric shapes provides unique design and spatial interplay, with layers of charcoal linework emphasizing passages. The work is derived from a variety of sources—sensory images, emotions, current events, personal experiences, and more, all integrated and emerging, hopefully, as engaging, unique work. My painting time is divided between the Texas Hill Country and Marfa, Texas, both of which hold the magic of vast skies, beautiful vistas and unseen muses.
